WELCOME TO KATA BEACH
Lying in the morning shadow of Big Buddha, Kata Beach is one of my favourite places on Phuket to visit, with a beautiful white sand beach, a CBD that supplies every consumer need and great nightlife scene that will have you parting until daybreak, Kata Beach is a Mini Patong that is still unspoiled.
‘Yai’ in Thai, means ‘Big’, ‘Noi’ means ‘small’ –
- Hat Kata Yai = Big Kata Beach
- Hat Kata Noi = Small Kata Beach
Kata Beach is well known for its super white sand beach and crystal clear water, which draws tens of thousands of tourists every year to relax, eat drink swim and enjoy the sun on its shores.
Banana boat rides, jet ski’s rentals, surfing and eating are popular activities that most tourist will enjoy when they take to the beach at Kata.
With views like this Kata Beach is hard to beat.
Why wouldn’t you want to visit Kata Beach?
The beach is unpolluted and is a relatively safe place to swim with no step drop offs and some safe swimming area flags, set up at some places by lifeguards.
The beach is wide and spacious with a healthy number of trees at its back, providing lots of shade for those who may have caught too many of the suns harsh tropical midday rays already.
Small gentle blue waves roll in to the beach from the Andaman Sea that are large enough to ride in on, with a surfboard. Surfboards are available to rent for a small fee.
Or you can just do nothing and soak it all up.
Unlike other places on Phuket, the beach at Kata is isolated from the CBD which has been kept from encroaching to the shoreline by the location of The Club Med Resort, that acts as a buffer zone.
Nothing but – road – footpath – trees and beach.
There’s lots of room for parking along this beach, and its free.
KATA BEACH STREET FOOD
There are lots of local Thai food sellers along Kata Beach offering food for tourist to buy, with a large concentration of stalls set up on the north end of the beach providing Thai food, Fruit and fruit drinks, hamburgers and hotdogs, corn on the cob and alcohol.
Look at these juicy grapes.
This stuff will keep you going.
BBQ chicken and papaya salad – yummy.
How do you like your corn cob – steamed or BBQ’d?
Fancy some Thai stir fry and rice? extra chilli?
A mango smoothie will put lead in your pencil on a hot day.
When all else fails, ice-cream is a winner.
Bugger it, lets get wasted instead, beers for everyone!
THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT (CBD)
The CBD consists of a set of streets that run west to east of highway 4233, which is the main coastal road heading north and south through Kata Beach.
The town of Kata has nowhere to go but back into the hinterland where it eventually crosses paths with Patak Road or highway 4028, the road leading to Chalong.
Kata’s CBD will be most visible running north to south and its most popular area is the south part of Kata Beach where Kata Yai finishes and Kata Noi begins. From here you can also head east up the hill and go to the famous Karon Lookout.

Kata Beach is another great alternative place to stay away from Patong, it is small enough to walk around and big enough to meet your needs, and has enough places to go too that will keep you entertained both day and night.
