WHERE IS THE NEW PHUKET BUS TERMINAL?
Where is the new Phuket bus station? Is what most people say who turn up at the old terminal, only to be told that the old bus station no longer services passengers looking to head back to the mainland of Thailand.
Finding out that the old bus station is no longer the main bus terminal servicing the island can throw a temporary spanner in the works, but it’s not such a big deal just take a deep breath and relax.
Finding the new Phuket bus station, can be difficult if you haven’t been updated as to its whereabouts, and the locals won’t be able to explain where it is either, they will just say or point out a 10 Baht public bus (the blue / pink song taewls) that is, or will be going to the new station.
Simply put – the new Phuket bus terminal is 4.5 km’s north of the old one.
The new Phuket bus terminal is approximately 4.5 km’s north of the old Phuket bus station on Thepkrasattri Rd and is about a 20 -30 minute trip during peak hour traffic.
The new Phuket bus station is about 400 meters south of Supa Cheap shopping centre, so if you’re heading to the new Phuket bus Terminal and you see Supa Cheap on the right, then you have gone too far and need to turn around and go back.
PHUKET BUS TERMINAL 2
The new Phuket bus station is also known as Phuket bus terminal 2, it is bigger and better than the original in Phuket Town, the only drawback is that it is out in the middle of no-where.
ARRIVING AND DEPARTING
The terminal itself is large and spacious and caters for all the arrivals and departures from the island, at any one time there can be as many as 10 – 15 large air-conditioned coaches on standby in the parking bays that have just arrived or getting ready to leave.
If you have just arrived at bus terminal 2, then you will be wanting to find transport to your next destination, there is a taxi service and information desk at the back of the terminal where there are a few options to choose from –
- Catch a metered taxi for 500 – 600 baht
- Hire a group minivan for about 400 Baht
- Hire a mini-van for 800 baht
- Take a song taewl for 10 baht
- Go hire a motor bike taxi (negotiable).
- Hire a motor bike for 200 – 300 baht/day
If you choose to hire a motorbike, don’t rent one at the terminal, the lady who runs the bike rental shop is totally unreasonable in her demands and prices, there is another shop out on the highway directly across from the bus terminal, and you can rent a bike from the man there as low as 150 baht per day and he does not need to hold your passport as security.
BUYING TICKETS FOR DEPARTURES
To find the ticket sellers, walk through the main entrance at the front of the building, there will be counters to the left and right of the corridor with windows and counters of various destinations along with timetables and prices clearly marked.
There are also plenty of staff available who will offer to help point you to the right counter if you’re a bit overwhelmed by the enormous number of choices that are on offer to go to.

HOW TO GET THERE
Depending where you are on the Island, you will have to get on Thepkrasattri Rd, which is the main road north, into and out of Old Phuket Town.
Thepkrasattri Rd is marked on the map with the red line,
- Money exchange
- Convenience store
- taxi services
- Massage venue
- Internet cafe
- Site seeing and travel agents
Catching a bus in Phuket has never been easier, getting there is the hard bit and goal is to be there before departure time, so give yourself plenty of time, take into account things like rain slowing traffic times down, peak hour traffic, roadwork’s, that will slow you’re journey down to a snail’s pace. Leave at least 2 hours before hand from the west side of the Island.
