SPOT THE BIG BUDDHA
If you travel to the south of Phuket Island, you won’t be able to miss the giant statue of Buddha sitting high above its surroundings, nearly 400 meters up, shinning white, on top of a mountain range, looking East, towards the rising sun, watching over Chalong Bay, past the Phi Phi Islands and beyond to the Thai mainland.
The Big Buddha stands out! Its big, really BIG and that’s what attracts pilgrims and tourist alike to this colossal image like a magnet, its sheer size from any distance or point on the Island from where you can see it, immediately makes you want to get closer to view it in more detail just to see how big it actually is.
The official dimensions of Big Buddha are 45 meters high and 25.5 meters wide but when you go there and stand in front of the image, then these measurements seem to be a little conservative, it looks a lot bigger.
While Big Buddha is only 3 km’s in a straight line from Chalong roundabout, the winding road to the top of Mount Nagakerd is about 6.5kms, but is definitely worth the journey up to the summit, past the elephant villages and the restaurants to one of the best views on the Island, that lets you see both sides of Phuket.
WHAT TO TAKE
1st , remember this is a temple for Buddhists, please act with the same reverence that you would in a religious place in your own home country, so bring –
- Good behaviour
- Make sure you are adequately covered
- Dress with appropriate attire
- Bring hat and sunglasses
- Bring camera and drinking water
HOW TO GET THERE
Unfortunately, the road that leads up to big Buddha is not clearly marked, although in the last few years a bit of effort has gone into at least putting up a few small signs at the several roads off the highway that will eventually lead up to Big Buddha
Yot Sane 1 Alley is the road you want to find, travelling north or south on Highway 4021, keep your eyes peeled for the signs guiding you to Big Buddha, there is a Family Mart on the corner and a hand painted sign with a red arrow pointing the way.
There are also 3 – 4 other roads that you can take, that that will eventually lead back on to Yot Sane 1 Rd and up to Big Buddha.
If you are travelling north from Chalong roundabout, keep watch of your trip counter and you will need to turn left around 1 km mark from the roundabout.
If you are travelling south and come to Chalong roundabout, then you have gone too far and need to turn around and go back 1 km, look for the signs.
