Most people never get to the sleepy seaside town of Panawa for a look around, with the only well know landmark being the Phuket Aquarium, it’s not exactly a tourist magnet, but, Panawa has a lot more to offer than first meets the eye.
Panawa is a little off the beaten track and hidden away from passerby’s and accounts for why so little has changed over the years, but it seems that developers are reconsidering this beautiful spot with many new resorts, restaurants and attractions springing up seemingly overnight in the area.
Panawa’s claim to fame is that it was once one of the main ports on Phuket, and while those days are gone, there is still a lot of maritime activity here and is the location of the 3rd Thai Navy Command as well as the Maritime Customs Port.
Today Panawa is most known for the location of the Phuket Aquarium and Marine Biology Centre and turtle hatchery, which still attracts many tourists daily to the area while sightseeing.
Phuket Aquarium is a good way to spend an hour or so looking at what’s on offer and keeping the kids entertained, it is well designed and set out, with hundreds of specimen to view and is well worth the cheap 100 Baht admission price, kids are 50 Baht.
Open daily 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM.
AO YON BEACHES
Ao Yon Noi Beach and Ao Yon Beach are perhaps the nicest and easiest accessible beaches at Panawa but the way to them is not clearly marked and the turn off easy to miss
AO YON WATERFALL
Ao Yon Waterfall is another little secret in Panawa, and is not clearly marked by signage unless you can read Thai, the waterfall is a fair way back in the hills overlooking Ao Yon Beaches but gently falls and winds its way down to Ao Yon Noi Beach and into the ocean.
CHALONG BAY VIEWPOINT
This great little spot is a parkland set aside for the public to sit, eat, drink and enjoy the scenery along the south coast of Panawa, with great views of Chalong Bay and sunset photo opportunities with Big Buddha in the background, it is a favourite with locals and tourist alike.
Just to the side of Ao Yon Khoa Khad Alley, the site is easy to get to and there is plenty of free space for parking, there are under cover seating and tables to relax by that provide shelter from the sun and rain.
KHAO KHAD LOOKOUT
Khao Khad Lookout is the only true 360°, unobstructed viewpoint on Phuket located on top of a large man made tower and viewing platform where you can see all the way to Phuket Town and south to the tip of Rawai.
Khao Khad Lookout can be a little hard to find and is a bit of a steep climb up to the viewing platform, but once you are there and enjoy the fantastic views, you will forget all about the effort to get there.
Panawa is located – south – southwest on Phuket Island, it is about halfway between Phuket Town and Chalong
